The Bethesda Residence is set within an established suburban neighborhood minutes from downtown Bethesda, Maryland. Designed to rethink suburban living through a modern lens, the project balances proximity to city life with privacy, daylight, indoor-outdoor connection, and material durability.
The house responds carefully to its compact 1/8-acre lot and the proximity of neighboring houses, balancing both openness and discretion through careful massing, tailored openings, and a central daylighting strategy. Integrated terraces and a lap pool/spa maximize the small site while offering several indoor & outdoor destinations and garden spaces at the front and rear of the property.
The home is carefully scaled to blend with neighboring houses rather than overwhelm them, balancing a strong architectural identity with sensitivity to its suburban context. From the street and sidewalk, this three-story home appears as a two-story building because the third floor is set back from the street facade to make way for a large outdoor roof terrace.
Its location within convenient walking distance of downtown amenities and public transportation reduces reliance on cars and supports a more connected pattern of daily life. Tailored openings, refined materials, and a composed street presence allow the home to feel iconic while still integrating within the community.
At the heart of the home, a three-story faceted light well draws daylight deep into the interior. Positioned alongside the main stair, this vertical volume allows sunlight to cascade downward, distributing diffuse light across circulation spaces on multiple levels without excessive heat gain. In a dense suburban context where privacy is critical, the light well functions as both an organizational and experiential element, bringing light into the center of the home while shielding views from adjacent properties.
Throughout the day, sunlight flows down through the light well and animates the interiors with dramatic luminosity and the play of light and shadow. Outdoor connections at both the ground floor and roof extend daily living outward, with terraces, garden areas, and direct connections to the pool and spa.
The Bethesda Residence emphasizes durability, material efficiency, daylighting, landscape, and long-term performance. The all-electric home uses a geothermal ground-source heat pump for heating and cooling, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while supporting efficient year-round comfort. From the outset, the clients sought a durable, low-maintenance exterior paired with a strong architectural presence.
Fiber cement panels were selected to form a crisp, sculptural facade that captures texture and shifting light throughout the day. While cast-in-place concrete was initially considered, the fiber cement system is more sustainable and allows for greater flexibility in construction detailing while maintaining the desired sense of solidity, precision, and refinement. High-performance windows are used throughout.
The central light well optimizes daylight distribution while controlling heat gain, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning during the day. Native plantings and flowers support local ecosystems by attracting pollinators and reinforcing the project’s connection to the site.
