In contemporary urban life, the house has become increasingly detached from the systems that sustain it. Food is produced elsewhere. Water arrives without visible cycles. Waste exists without accountability. Domestic architecture has evolved into an efficient yet isolated container, one that is optimized for comfort but disconnected from regenerative systems.
‘The Aalloa Hills Residence’ proposes a recalibration.
Located on a natural plateau near Gandhinagar, Gujarat, the project is a climate-responsive net-zero residence, integrating Bharatponic, an aeroponic urban farm, forming a unified ecological system. It repositions the home not as a passive consumer of resources, but as visible infrastructure, capable of growing food, managing water, moderating climate, and participating in environmental regeneration.
The residence is conceived as a linear, horizontally articulated volume that spans the plateau lightly, almost bridge-like in its relationship to the land. Elevated on pilotis, the primary living spaces hover above the terrain, allowing natural drainage patterns, vegetation continuity, and wind movement to remain undisturbed beneath. Rather than imposing mass upon the site, the architecture establishes a calibrated datum, aligned to the sun, shaped by prevailing winds, and nested within the existing topography.
Orientation functions as the principal climatic device. A north–south axis minimizes western heat gain, while deep verandahs and concrete sun-breakers regulate solar exposure. Cavity masonry walls and high-performance glazing reduce thermal transfer, and breezes moving across adjacent water bodies are drawn through shaded edges to enable passive cross-ventilation. Through this orchestration of sections, shading, and airflow, the house operates without mechanical air conditioning for most of the year, in this hot arid region.
The plan unfolds along a strong longitudinal spine. Arrival unfolds through a thread-like ramp that ascends gradually from lower service quarters to the main living level. The movement is choreographed, revealing framed glimpses of the valley before opening to expansive panoramas at the plateau’s crest.
Internally, the house privileges spatial continuity over enclosure. A double-height living volume anchors the plan, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior. Deep verandahs project outward as inhabitable thresholds, mediating climate while framing landscape. Light, breeze, vegetation, and birdsong traverse the architecture freely.
Material expression remains restrained and honest. White stucco surfaces mitigate solar absorption, while black stone flooring along verandah edges provides calibrated thermal mass. The minimal palette allows the surrounding terrain to dominate perception.
While the residence achieves net-zero operational performance through passive design, rainwater harvesting, composting, high-performance envelopes, and real-time environmental monitoring, the project’s ambition extends beyond efficiency.
It asks a more urgent question: Can domestic architecture shift from minimizing harm to actively generating value?
This inquiry catalyzed the integration of Bharatponic, a net-zero aeroponic farm conceived as an architectural extension of domestic life.
Organized as a modular network of vertical aeroponic towers, Bharatponic integrates controlled nutrient delivery, environmental monitoring, automation, and optimized light distribution to ensure resource-efficient, high-performance cultivation. Designed for seamless scalability from individual homes to communities and campuses, it transforms food production into a visible, participatory component of everyday urban life.
The Residence operates as an integrated ecological system in which rainwater harvesting reduces dependence on municipal water supplies, organic waste is composted and reintegrated into productive cycles, passive design strategies minimise operational energy demand, smart systems continuously monitor environmental performance in real time, and aeroponic cultivation localises food production, shortening supply chains while reducing transport-related emissions.
The strategies demonstrated here are not singular gestures tied to a specific site. Rather, the project is a living prototype, an evolving framework that invites refinement, adaptation, and broader application. The aeroponic system is modular and adaptable. Climatic calibration strategies are transferable to similar semi-arid regions. Closed-loop thinking can inform residential typologies across densities and contexts.
In an era defined by climate volatility, resource fragility, and supply-chain vulnerability, architecture must expand its mandate. This project suggests that the house, the most fundamental unit of settlement, can become an active participant in ecological regeneration.
