Located on the east coast of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada, Pointe Au Baril is renowned for its freshwater landscape and ancient bedrock archipelagoes. Isolated from the mainland, Whistling Wind Island embraces the region’s harsh winds, an ideal backdrop for the owner’s passion for kite surfing.
The one-acre site features four gabled structures – a main cottage, bunkie, sauna and boat storage – each with asymmetrical rooflines that appear wind-swept and scattered across the landscape. These buildings are linked by wooden gangways leading to boat landings, with expansive decks extending over the rugged terrain.
Whitewashed boards line the ceilings and walls, extending into deep exterior window alcoves. The design is a testament to sustainability, utilizing passive heating and cooling with fireplaces to eliminate the need for mechanical systems. Seamlessly blending with Pointe Au Baril’s wild beauty, the architecture offers a safe refuge to experience the raw power of nature.
