Nestled in the heart of Limassol’s historic city center, this project reimagines a modest yet characterful single-story residence built in the 1950s modernist tradition. Though not a listed building, the house sits within a designated special character area, calling for a sensitive design approach that honors the architectural rhythm of its surroundings while embracing the possibilities of contemporary transformation.
The design explores three strategies:
1. Adaptive Extension introduces a new upper level, providing additional living space while preserving the spatial logic and proportions of the original structure. The vertical expansion speaks the same architectural language—clean lines, rhythmic openings, and restrained detailing—ensuring continuity between old and new.
2. Reinterpreted Form offers a more refined transformation, enhancing the existing building through spatial reconfiguration and material upgrades. This approach maintains the architectural identity while improving circulation, daylighting, and internal relationships to suit the lifestyle of a modern family.
3. Enclosure Concept represents a more radical yet contextually sensitive vision: the original house is wrapped within a new cubic shell that redefines its external presence and introduces internal courtyards. Inspired by the traditional Cypriot home, these courtyards create layered spatial experiences, offering privacy, light, ventilation, and social intimacy. The new skin functions as both architectural expression and environmental buffer.
Sustainability is central. Photovoltaic panels generate on-site energy, while self-shading elements, natural ventilation, and internal courtyards enhance thermal performance and reduce reliance on mechanical systems. The design integrates high-performance insulation, double glazing, and smart energy systems to optimize efficiency. Modern anti-seismic upgrades ensure structural safety.
This is more than a renovation—it is a forward-looking architectural renewal. By blending heritage with innovation and embedding passive design strategies, the project creates a resilient, energy-efficient home that honors its past while addressing the demands of the future.
